Qatar is one of India's Emigration Check Required (ECR) countries. If your passport is marked ECR, your agency must get emigration clearance for you on the eMigrate portal before you fly. That includes the compulsory Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana insurance (₹275 for two years or ₹375 for three, with ₹10 lakh accident cover). If an agent says you can fly on a visit visa and "convert it later", say no. You would be travelling without emigration clearance or insurance.
From CV to flight, step by step
- Apply with a Gulf-format CV to named agencies or employers. See the Gulf CV format.
- Interview and written offer: check the basic salary, allowances, hours and contract length.
- Visit a Qatar Visa Centre (QVC) in India: your identity and documents are checked, you sign your work contract digitally, give your biometrics and take the medical.
- Emigration clearance on eMigrate if your passport is ECR: the agency arranges it.
- After arrival your employer arranges your Qatar ID (residence permit).
Things to know about working in Qatar
The legal minimum wage
Since March 2021 Qatar has a minimum wage for all workers of all nationalities, including domestic workers: a basic wage of QAR 1,000 a month, plus at least QAR 300 for food and QAR 500 for housing if the employer does not provide them. No legal offer can be below this.
Changing jobs
Workers in Qatar no longer need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer to change jobs, or an exit permit to leave the country.
The contract you sign at the QVC
You sign your contract at the visa centre before you fly. Read it there: it should match your offer. If it does not, stop and ask your agency before signing.
Red flags for jobs in Qatar
- Money before an offer. No genuine employer charges for the job. Pay only a licensed agency's service charge, after the offer, with a receipt.
- No licence number. Every registered agency has an MEA licence number. Check it on eMigrate using our licence-check guide.
- "Visit visa, convert later." You lose your emigration clearance, insurance and legal protection.
- Only a mobile number and a Gmail address. Real agencies show an office address and a licence number.
- A salary below QAR 1,000 basic. It is below Qatar's legal minimum wage, so the offer is not lawful.
