Before you start
- Passport valid for at least the next two years is safest — many visas need six months or more of validity, and contracts are often two years.
- Know whether your passport is ECR or ECNR. ECR passports need emigration clearance to work in the Gulf; your agency will handle it.
- Collect your papers as PDFs on your phone: CV, educational certificates, trade certificates (NEBOSH, CSWIP, ASNT, ITI and so on), experience letters, passport copy and a passport-size photo.
- A Gmail address that you check every day. Most Gulf agencies reply by email, and some by WhatsApp.
Step 1 — Find genuine adverts
Look for adverts that name the agency or employer, show its MEA licence number (for Indian agencies), and give a clear way to apply. Newspapers' Gulf job supplements, agency websites and employers' careers pages are the usual sources. Skip anything that asks for money before an offer or promises a visa without an interview — our guide to checking an agency's licence takes two minutes.
Step 2 — Send your application
Send a separate email for each job. Agencies sort CVs by position, so a clear email gets read.
- Subject: the position and your experience — “Application – Scaffolder – 7 years (4 in Saudi)”.
- Body: three or four lines — the position you are applying for, your years in the trade, your Gulf experience, and your passport status.
- Attachment: your CV as a PDF, named clearly — Ramesh-Kumar-Scaffolder-7yrs.pdf. Add certificates only if the advert asks.
- Follow up after about a week if there is no reply, then once more. Follow-ups are often what gets a reply.
Our Gulf CV format guide shows exactly what the CV should contain.
Step 3 — The interview
Gulf interviews come in three kinds:
- CV selection — the client shortlists from CVs alone, sometimes with a phone call.
- Online interview — a video call with the client (Zoom, Teams or WhatsApp video). Test your camera and connection first.
- Client interview in person — at a hotel or the agency's office in an Indian city. Trades often include a practical trade test (welding coupons, electrical tasks, rigging).
Bring printed copies of your CV, certificates and passport. Dress neatly. Answer in simple English about the work you have actually done.
Step 4 — Offer letter and contract
Read the offer before you accept. It should name the employer, the position, the basic salary and allowances, working hours, the contract length, accommodation, food or food allowance, transport, annual leave and air ticket. Ask the agency to explain anything unclear. Keep a copy of everything you sign.
Step 5 — Medical, visa and emigration clearance
- Medical test at an approved centre. For most Gulf countries this is a standard pre-employment medical; your agency tells you which centre and system applies.
- Visa — the employer applies in the Gulf country and sends it to you or the agency.
- Emigration clearance (ECR passports) — your agency or employer applies on the government's eMigrate portal. As part of it you buy the compulsory Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana insurance: ₹275 for two years or ₹375 for three years, covering ₹10 lakh for accidental death or permanent disability.
- Pre-departure — keep copies of your passport, visa, contract and the agency's details with you and with your family.
What you should — and should not — pay
| Cost | Who usually pays |
|---|---|
| Agency service charge | You, only to a licensed agency, at most ₹30,000 + 18% GST, after the offer, with a receipt. Many “free recruitment” jobs charge nothing. |
| Passport, photos, certificate copies | You |
| Medical test | Varies — check the advert or ask before you go |
| PBBY insurance | You (₹275 or ₹375) |
| Visa and air ticket | Usually the employer — it should be written in your offer |
| “Registration fee”, “job deposit”, “visa processing” to an unlicensed agent | Never. Refuse and report it. |

Questions people ask
How long does it take to get a Gulf job from India?
It varies a lot. After an interview and offer, the medical, visa and emigration clearance often take a few weeks. Finding the right job usually takes longer — which is why applying to many genuine adverts, and following up, matters most.
Can I apply for Gulf jobs without an agent?
Yes. You can apply directly on employers' careers websites, and some companies hire directly. For many trade jobs, though, Gulf employers recruit through licensed Indian agencies, so applying to licensed agencies is normal and safe.
What should my email to a Gulf agency say?
Keep it short: the position, your years of experience, your Gulf experience if any, and your passport status — with your CV attached as a PDF. Put the position and your years in the subject line.
Is a medical test needed for Gulf jobs?
Yes, a pre-employment medical test is required for work visas in the Gulf countries. Your agency or employer will tell you which approved centre to use.
Who do I contact if an agency cheats me?
Call the Government of India's 24x7 toll-free helpline 1800 11 3090, WhatsApp +91 74283 21144, or email helpline@mea.gov.in. You can also complain to the Protector of Emigrants office in your region and report the agent on the eMigrate portal.
